The Sound of One Hand Clapping by Richard Flanagan

"Afterwards the rain stopped, and Sonja followed the other kids outside to play, and no-one spoke about what had happened. There was too much to it, and no-one spoke about it."

Set in Tasmania and drifting between time periods, this harrowing tale is not the kind of literary prozac that will cheer up your day. The characters are beautifully realised and their torments are ever present and particularly visceral.

What horrific secrets drive Bojan to excessive drinking and domestic abuse? Why has Sonja returned to the land of her past?

While the odd sentence can verge on the overly flowery, this is a moving tale which will stay with you well after the final page. 4 out of 5 with excellent woodwork.
